Did you know that in most cases, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), not the California Highway Patrol, makes the determination to close State roads when necessary? CHP then enforces any closures that Caltrans makes. |
About Our Roads - El Dorado County has two highways, US 50 and SR 49, which intersect in Placerville. US 50 basically runs east-west from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe, then across the United States. SR 49 is the official "Mother Lode" highway, connecting the mining towns in California's Gold Country (from Sierra County in the north to Mariposa County in the south).
Outside the County to the north, Interstate 80 runs through Placer, Nevada, and Sierra counties on its way from San Francisco to Reno and beyond. Just outside the County to the south, SR 88 runs through Amador and Alpine counties on its way from Stockton to US 395 in Nevada. There are also County roads and U.S. Forest Service roads.
