Established in May 1890 as California's First Historic Monument, the Park has the purpose "to protect, preserve and interpret California's Gold Discovery Site and it's environs, the discoverer James W. Marshall and the impact of this momentous event on California and the world." No wonder this State Historic Park also enjoys National Landmark status.

Did you know?

Coloma has the shortest State Highway in California. SR 153 runs from SR 49 to Marshall's monument inside Marshall Gold Discovery SHP. Caltrans experts measure it at a paltry 0.55 mile long.

Top of page About seventy percent of Coloma is included in Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, which covers 273.6 acres at the American River and features 16 historical buildings, six interpretive concessions, and guided walks. Group tours are available by advanced arrangement.

Throughout the Park, you will see artifacts and exhibits about the Gold Rush, including mining methods, household articles, and tools. The Visitor Center and Museum offers exhibits, programs, movies, and publications about the Park.

A nearby monument of river cobbles marks the spot where the original mill stood. To the southwest, the statue of James W. Marshall can be seen pointing down to the spot where he first discovered gold.
