A Brief History
History tells that Washo Indian tribes once inhabited the shoreline, fishing the lake's deep blue water and trading their catch for the seeds and acorns harvested by the Maidu and Miwok tribes in western El Dorado County.
For a time, the lake was called Bigler Lake after California's third governor. It officially became Lake Tahoe in 1945.
